This special print of a “mirror carp” was etched by Georg Friedrich Schmidt after J. A. F. Krüger.
The print was published as a table marked number 17 in the book:
“Ichthyologie, ou histoire naturelle generale et particulare des poissons”
by Marcus Élieser Bloch between 1782 - 1795.
This book has long been regarded as the only comprehensive reference work on ichthyology = fish science. The book is still very valuable today.
The print depicts both sides of the fish.
Marcus Élieser Bloch was a renowned German natural scientist. He was born in 1723 and died in 1799. Ichthyology was his specialty, which he was one of the most important and leading experts on in the 18th century.
The edges of the sheet are slightly rubbed and browned. The upper part has irregular darkening. Rear adhesive strips are located on the sides, the remains of a former framing. On the bottom, only numbers in pencil are shown.
The signatures of Anton Ferdinand Krüger as well as Georg Friedrich Schmidt are legible on the bottom edge.
