Mahakala (from the Sanskrit mahā 'great' and kāla 'dark/black' or 'time') is a deity in Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. In vajrayana (Tibetan Buddhism) he is as 'dharmapala' (protector of the Buddhist teachings, the dharma) one of the eight severe, terrifying tutelary deities, [1] in Hinduism he represents the destructive, wrathful side of the god Shiva and is the consort of the goddess Kali. [2] In Japanese folklore he is worshipped as 'Daikokuten', one of the seven lucky gods. [3]

Mahakala was adopted in Buddhism from Hinduism and is depicted in many forms.
