JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT (1960-1988) New York artist Jean-Michael Basquiat was a young graffiti artist when he began his career on the New York subway.
From the streets of New York to the walls of the most prominent galleries, Basquiat gained international fame in his early twenties with his raw graphic works incorporating a mix of words, cartoons and cultural references. He was Andy Warhol’s friend and was the subject of a feature film by the same artist, Julian Schnabel. Although he died at the age of 27, Basquiat is one of the most admired artists of the emergence of the artistic boom of the 1980s.
His contemporaries: Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger, Julian Schnabel, Francesco Clemente and Andy Warhol. While Basquiat's career was short, his years were full of encounters and exchanges.
