Charles Nègre (1820-1880) - Le Marchand de coco (c. 1853)
Intaglio proces - Printerens blinde frimærke - 1. udgave - 1985

Hand Heliogravure on Hahnemühle woven paper.
Blind stamp of the printer, Pierre Brochet, lower right.
Sheet size : 40cm x 30cm

Famous for his engravings, Charles Nègre never engraved this image but only made a calotype (negative in paper) proof of it. In 1985, Pierre Brochet made an edition of 5 unpublished photographs from original calotypes by Charles Nègre limited to less than 250 copies. This print is one of them. It'll be delivered with a copy of the colophon sheet of the portfolio (see last pictures for more information).

Hand heliogravure, hardly used now but very popular in the later 19th century, involves the photographic transfer of the image to a copper plate, prepared with aquatint to give it tone, into which the design is etched. The plate is then hand-inked and printed from in the same way as an ordinary intaglio plate.
