Unlike the neighbouring Luluwa people, the Lwalu artists made masks that reflected a dramatically different style. The facial portrayals consist of purely geometric elements, sharply angled layers, and smooth, unadorned surfaces. The shapes of masks differ from each other by the distinctive noses, which were inspired by the beaks of different birds. These masks were worn during dances to celebrate the circumcision and initiation of young men into the Ngongo Society and to appease the spirits that control hunting.
